“ | Warning: Traitors have revealed your king's location to the enemy!!! | ” |
—In-game alert |
Treason is a technology in Age of Empires II available at the Castle. Once researched, it reveals all enemy and neutral Kings for a short time, and their location at that time is shown as explored through the fog of war. It is only available in the Regicide mode and replaces the Spies technology. Treason is not already researched in Post-Imperial matches. It is the only technology in the game to be temporary and researchable multiple times. It is researched almost instantly.
Treason is one of the most important technologies in Regicide games as it tells players where to mount their offensives and allows them to plan ahead. Note that a player will be informed if their King's location has been revealed with Treason
Trivia[]
- Treason is a crime against the state. In the context of the Middle Ages, treason is closely linked with kings since most governments in the Middle Ages were monarchies.
- Apart from advancing through the Ages, Treason is the only technology not to be affected by the Chinese civilization bonus, which reduces the cost of all other technologies (including Spies).
- Treason is not a true technology, as it behaves like an active ability similar to those in Age of Empires IV. It is researched (activated) instantly. It can be used more than once. Instead of having a cooldown, it has a resource cost attached to it.
