Unlike in future AoE games, the Town Center looks like a fountain rather than a building.
Town Center serves as the main deposit site for villagers to drop the resources they have been tasked to collect and carry out. Other functions includes to Train Villagers and to advance into the next Age.
This is the only game of the series where the Town Center does not defend itself.
Like a House, it also supports 4 population, and the reason is because its the first building to be around and to further support the player to train a few more Villagers before making a house.
You can't build more Town Centers unless your civilization has entered the Bronze Age and has Granary, Market and Government Center present as well.
[edit] Age of Empires II
The town centers are slightly expensive, but highly versatile.
They can be used as a defensive structure, it can Garrison up to 15 units, Train villagers, Advance into the next Ages and Serves as a main dropsite for your villagers to drop the resources they have collected. It is the only building that to start with have no minimum range.
The town center is very useful if, say, you put it between two resources, throw it in the center of a resource node, or plan to set up camy outside the enemy base.
- It is incredibly tough to crack if you are planning a DRUSH, or a dark age rush. It may even be impossible to kill in the 2nd age, unless you are prepared to use like 40 men at arms to do so. A town center is the thing that lets you create villagers, the key to your economy and therefore your military. Do not let it be destroyed.

The town centers is the starting building for your colony and also acts as the default Home City drop-off point. The town centers can train villagers, create Minutemen, and you can advance in age.
The town center is a strong building and it can defend itself from its top tower and can stock up 10 villagers to protect them and also can hold villagers too. If your Explorer has fallen in battle too close to enemy territory, instead of invading the enemy town you can just pay ransom money and get your Explorer back safely in your colony.
Only the Explorer can build a Town Center and there can only be one before Fortress Age which after that increases to three.
Portuguese get a free Covered Wagon every time they Age up until Industrial Age and together with some Home City shipments can have the maximum increase to Six Town centers.
Spanish in the other hand has a shipment which increases Town Center population so much that Houses are unnecessary.
