The best type of unit to counter the Tekkousen is Artillery, like all ships.
With European Cannons, Tekkousen outrange normal Frigates, while also proving to be a strong match even against highly upgraded ones. It can also be efficient at shelling land positions, though it is highly recommended to use Monitors when attacking anti-ship defenses (such as Outposts).

- It's the third armored ship to appear in game, after the Turtle Ship from Age of Empires II, and the Ironclad from The WarChiefs.
"The Korean kobukson (“turtle ship”) is often thought of as the first armored boat, a precursor to the American ironclads of the eighteenth century. However, the Japanese used armored ships in their feudal wars of the sixteenth century, as rival daimyo battled each other for land and sea supremacy. Daimyo Oda Nobunaga constructed six tekkousen (“iron armor ships”) for his personal navy. These boats were protected by 3-inch armor plating, and armed with multiple cannons and high caliber rifles. They were utilized during the invasion of Korea in 1592-1598."
