Trivia[]
- The Tekkousen is the third armored ship to appear in the Age of Empires series, after the Turtle Ship from Age of Empires II and the Ironclad from The WarChiefs.
- In Japanese, the Tekkousen's name is written as 鉄甲船.
History[]
“ | The Korean kobukson ("turtle ship") is often thought of as the first armored boat, a precursor to the American ironclads of the eighteenth century. However, the Japanese used armored ships in their feudal wars of the sixteenth century, as rival daimyo battled each other for land and sea supremacy. Daimyo Oda Nobunaga constructed six tekkousen ("iron armor ships") for his personal navy. These boats were protected by 3-inch armor plating, and armed with multiple cannons and high caliber rifles. They were utilized during the invasion of Korea in 1592-1598. | ” |
