The Tekkousen (pronounced Tek-oo-sen) is a strong Japanese naval unit that can be trained at the Dock.

It has similar hitpoints and strength to a Frigate, making it highly effective against weaker units such as the Galleon, Atakabune, Canoe, and Marathan Catamaran.

The best type of unit to counter the Tekkousen is Artillery, like all ships.

With European Cannons, Tekkousen outrange normal Frigates, while also proving to be a strong match even against highly upgraded ones. It can also be efficient at shelling land positions, though it is highly recommended to use Monitors when attacking anti-ship defences (such as Outposts).

Trivia Edit

  • It's the third armored ship to appear in game, after the Turtle Ship from Age of Empires III, and the Ironclad from the WarChiefs expansion.

History Edit

"The Korean kobukson (“turtle ship”) is often thought of as the first armored boat, a precursor to the American ironclads of the eighteenth century. However, the Japanese used armored ships in their feudal wars of the sixteenth century, as rival daimyo battled each other for land and sea supremacy. Daimyo Oda Nobunaga constructed six tekkousen (“iron armor ships”) for his personal navy. These boats were protected by 3-inch armor plating, and armed with multiple cannons and high caliber rifles. They were utilized during the invasion of Korea in 1592-1598."
