Once the easily recovered surface deposits of metal were gathered, early miners dug into the ground excavating pits, or quarries, following the deposits of metal into the earth. Quarries were labor intensive and often engaged large teams of slaves to do the backbreaking work. Quarries were most common when the ore seams were diffuse and near the surface.
