Pikemen were used during Medieval and Renaissance ages. They were used to defend against cavalry and were useful because the pike could attack the enemy at a greater distance. Pikemen were replaced by musketeers and other riflemen in the mid-seventeenth century, the invention of the bayonet as the anti-cavalry solution ended the "Pike Era".
