It benefits from upgrades such as Forging, Iron Casting, Blast Furnace, Scale Barding Armor, Chain Barding Armor, Plate Barding Armor for armor and attack, Husbandry increases speed and Bloodlines and Zealotry hitpoints and can be upgraded into Elite Mameluke.
A well controlled group of these can take down any units, except by higher number of ranged foot soldiers. The Mameluke is a well rounded unit suited for most combat situations. Since Mamelukes are treated as ships, they receive bonus damage from towers and castles and are also affected by the heated shot upgrade, this makes the Mameluke much less suitable as a raiding unit.
The mamelukes were slaves trained as warriors by various Arab leaders, partially because early believers in Islam would not fight each other. Slave warriors got around this ban. The mamelukes were well trained and highly motivated. A mameluke army from Egypt won a rare victory against the Mongols in Syria, turning these barbarian horsemen back from the Nile and North Africa. In time the mamelukes rose up against their Arab rulers and took control themselves. When Napoleon invaded Egypt in the eighteenth century, he defeated a mameluke army at the Battle of the Pyramids.
Age of Empires III Edit
|First Appearance||Age of Empires III|
|Age Available||Industrial Age|
|Base Hit Points||1450|
|Resists||40% vs. Ranged|
|R.O.F.||1.5 / 3.0 (Siege)|
In Age of Empires III, the Mameluke unit has switched from the use of camel to a white horse. It is a heavy mercenary unit that can be randomly trained from Saloon or sent from the Home City; most European civilizations may acquire Mameluke.
The Mameluke boasts some of the highest hitpoints for a cavalry unit (1450 in any age, without upgrades). This is far greater than even the two other non-Lancer hand cavalry mercenaries (namely, Stradiots and Hackapells), though their attack is lower than both (around that of a Hussar). Naturally, this excessive durability allows them to best even anti-cavalry units, such as Rodeleros and Pikemen.
