Land of Lakes is a random semi-closed water map introduced in Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten. It features a large land landmass dotted with multiple lakes and ponds, giving the map its name.
Overview
Players start out on a dry land peninsula on either corners of the map. On team matches, they share a side and still have a whole a peninsula to themselves. Each peninsula features very flat terrain with little to no hills and provide well land to build on. Each peninsula contains lush green grass and provides fertile soil for farming.
There are extremely large amounts of lakes and ponds found in the map and they present unique strategies and opportunities to players. Galley rushing can prove to be catastrophic on the wrong lake and fishing on the right one can be a great boost to the player's economy. These should all be kept in mind when playing on this map and each lake should be explored well.
Due to the lakes surrounding 3 sides of each peninsula, the player can expect attacks on all fronts and building walls, Castles, and Watch Towers can help rid of enemy invaders.
Like other special maps in the expansion, Relics will be found in the narrow isthmuses connecting each peninsula and can provide a trickle of gold once gathered by Monks.
Environment
Deer will be found near grazing grass near the player's Town Center, and will be a fast although safe source of food. Wild Boars will be found foraging near the banks of the lakes and will be significantly farther away. They will viciously attack any Villagers attempting to hunt them and will be quiet dangerous. Stray pairs of Sheep will be scattered near the edges of the map. Wolves will be lurking in the narrow isthmuses and will be lethally attack any lone Villagers.
The large lakes in the map will be home to thriving colonies of Marlin and Fishing Ships can gather them for a well source of food.
Trees will be found in all kinds of formations in the map, 2-3 lone trees will be found nearby the player's Town Center and medium sized forests will be found in the edges of the map and nearby the center of the map. Taking control of the central part of the map will help ensure control over those trees and give a steady supply of wood. Among the tree species found in map include Forest Trees and Pine Trees.
Gold Mines will be found scattered all over the map and hidden in the deep forests in the edges of the map, providing a well source of gold. Stone Mines will be discovered in a similar fashion, scattered throughout the map in different areas and providing a source of stone.
