Heavy Infantry are the backbone of an army. In Age of Empires III, generally heavy infantry counters Cavalry, Abstract Infantry and works great againsts Buildings. But they are very vulnerable to Artillery and Light Infantry. Most heavy infantry is good against light infantry in melee, though units like Grenadiers are not effective in melee.
