The Gatherer is one of the Norse villager units in Age of Mythology. Unlike Egyptian Laborers and Greek Villagers, Norse Gatherers cannot build structures; instead Norse infantry units (including the Hersir) do this.

Gatherers can be instantly converted into Ulfsarks for the full price of a new Ulfsark. However, this wastes the resources spent on training the gatherer, so it is usually better to train Ulfsarks from the Longhouse or the Town Center, unless there is a dire need.

Note: Even at maximum population, only 80 Gatherers may be trained.

Tasks Edit

Gatherers can be assigned with the following tasks:

  • gather food from Farms and Berry Bushes
  • slaughter domestic animals then gather food from them
  • hunt wild animals and gather food from them
  • chop down trees and gather wood
  • mine gold
  • build Farms (only)

Buildings Edit

Gatherers can only build Farms (once the Classical Age is reached) and cannot repair buildings.

History Edit

Norse Gatherers form the basis of your economy. Make sure you have enough Gatherers to generate a steady inflow of resources, but remember they are weak in combat and can only plant Farms. Norse infantry are used to build and repair all other buildings.

The lands of Scandinavia, like those of Greece, were not great for agriculture and the growing season in the north is short. The villagers of the Norse, by necessity, were spread out in small bands that supplanted their limited crops with hunting, gathering, and fishing. The harsh climate and demanding life of the Norse forced them to become particularly good as craftsmen, explorers, traders, colonizers, and raiders.
