Clubmen are the first pure-military unit which can be produced and has a low damage and hit point value, only beaten by the Bowman at 35 and Slinger at 25 and as such has limited uses. They are armed, as their name suggests, with clubs which they use to bash their enemies. Infrequently armies are made entirely of these units as they are relatively inflexible and take a long time to kill other units. As such one of the first upgrades available in the Tool Age is to upgrade the Clubman to an Axeman. After this however they cannot be upgraded again.
[edit] Tactics
Just as the militia of Age of Empires 2, they are a simple waste of money on what can be resources to advance to the other age, but if you have a good economy, you can do 10 clubmen to disrupt your opponent's economy. Otherwise, the food spent on clubmen can be spent on villagers that can actually benefit you in the Bronze Age and beyond, or simply conserved to advance.
