Chieftains is a technology in Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten that is unique to the Vikings and can be researched at the Castle. Once researched, it gives infantry an attack bonus of +5 against cavalry and +4 against camel units. As of update 81058 it also generates gold when infantry kills certain units:
- 5 gold per Villager killed;
- 20 gold per Trade Cart, Trade Cog, Monk, Missionary, and Warrior Priest.
Strategy[]
Apart from the Teutonic Knight, the Berserk is one of the most durable infantry units in the game, and the Viking Champion is not far behind. With Chieftains researched, they become even more versatile, as they can now counter even heavy cavalry units quite effectively. In fact, the Viking Champion can trade cost-efficiently against Paladins, something no other Champion can do (except arguably the Malay Two-Handed Swordsman, depending on how much gold is weighted). Archers, however, remain a heavy threat to them. Also, the effectiveness of Pikemen is increased, as the damage gap is now only 5 anti-cavalry damage, making it more forgiving that the Vikings lack the Halberdier.
