—In-game description

The Barracks is a military building in Age of Empires III that trains and upgrades infantry. It becomes available upon reaching the Commerce Age.

The Native American civilizations, Russians, and Maltese have access to the War Hut, Blockhouse, and Hospital, respectively. The War Hut and Blockhouse combine the functions of a Barracks and an Outpost, whereas the Hospital combines the function of a Barracks and a Field Hospital. The Chinese train banner armies containing infantry through the War Academy. The African civilizations have access to the War Camp, which combine the functions of a Barracks and Stable.

Trivia[]

  • The ambient sound for the Barracks is a remastered version of the Military Academy selection sound from the 1998 video game Caesar III.
  • Ironically, although the Barracks' history description (see below) says that Barracks were built specifically to stop colonists from having to house soldiers, the Barracks does not provide any population and needs houses (civillian ones) to house the soldiers.
  • Even though the Barracks is not available until the Commerce Age, it has its Exploration Age appearance, shared by all European civilizations. This appearance can be seen in the Scenario Editor or if the player starts a game on the Texas map in the Exploration Age.

History[]

Barracks were constructed in the British colonies when colonists tired of housing British regulars for two straight years during the French and Indian War. Hostilities escalated as increasing numbers of troops were sent to defend the Crown's interests. More and more settlers were required by law to provide shelter to the soldiers. Eventually the dissatisfaction amongst colonists grew so strong that Lord Laudon, General in Chief of America, agitated for the construction of a number of barracks to house the soldiers.

The Third Amendment of the U.S. Constitution specifically prohibits the requirement by law for citizens to house soldiers.
