The Aztec civilization is first featured in Age of Empires II: The Conquerors as one of its new playable civilizations and in Age of Empires III as a Native American tribe. It is once again present as major civilization in Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs.
Age of Empires II: The Conquerors Expansion

In the expansion for the second installment of the series the Aztec play a major role in the game, having their own campaign in which the player is commanded to repel the Spanish invasion of Tenochticlan. In addition to the Mayan civilization, they lack cavalry of any variation.
Age of Empires III

Aztecs are one of many Native American tribes to forge alliance with. They Provide Units such as Aztec Eagle Warrior and Aztec Jaguar Warrior. They can be found in Sonora and Yucatan maps.
- In The WarChiefs they are replaced by Zapotec.
Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs

The Aztecs are one of the three civilizations added in The WarChiefs expansion. Most of their military units are unique to them, with the exception of Canoes and War Canoes. Like the The Conquerors expansion, the Aztecs lacks of cavalry units, but also they lack of artillery units, that other native civilizations have access. To make up for this the Aztec also have specialized infantry units that fulfill similar roles.
