This page is a style guide for all images to be used at the Age of Empires Series Wiki for articles and official documents. It establishes our house style, to help editors upload images with consistent layout, and formatting. The goal is to make the encyclopedia easier and more intuitive to use. Consistency in style and formatting promotes clarity and cohesion; this is especially important when adding images to an article. Users who are unfamiliar with the process of uploading images should see Help:Images page for more information.

File extensions

There are several file extensions that can be uploaded, with the most common being .JPG and .PNG. Due to its lossless data compression, .PNG files are generally preferable and should be used whenever possible.

Animated .GIFs should generally be avoided if possible due to their lack of purpose and distracted quality. If a still image is insufficient to illustrate the text it accompanies, then one should consider rewriting the text to better convey the intended message.

Uploading images

Naming and captions

  • Name images descriptively to avoid confusion, e.g. Archerrush.png, ArcherRush.png or Archer rush.png not Screenshot 11/12/2016 10:47 am.png. Uploading an image using names such as qwerty_asdf_0123456789.jpg will be deleted or moved at the discretion of the administrator.
  • Use captions to explain the relevance of the image to the article. Only complete sentences in captions always end in a period. Captions are not italicized unless the name of the game is mentioned. E.g. An in-game Fluyt and Thanks to their massive spear, Kamayuks are able to attack from right behind a partner.

Layout

  • Avoid sandwiching text between two images that face each other, or between an image and an infobox. If it is not possible to comfortably fit all required images into the text, add them as a gallery at the end of the article.
  • Any given article shouldn't have too many images inserted sporadicly. If multiple images are required to convey a topic, consider making a gallery with a level two heading at the bottom of the article (After the Skin gallery if it is a Champion Article).
  • Lead images, which usually appear inside an infobox, should usually be no wider than 200px.
  • Thumbnails shown in the article should generally be 200px for larger images. However, images containing important detail (e.g. a map, diagram, graph or chart) may need larger sizes than usual to make them readable.
  • Images are preferred to bet Right-alignment to left-alignment. Although this is allowed when other objects interfere or make it visually unappealing.
  • If an article does not have an image in it, add the {{needImage}} tag.
  • Do not upload images we already have. If you plan on uploading an image, look around the Age of Empires Online Wiki first to see if it has already been uploaded by someone else.

To change image extensions, if necessary, it may be used the preferred application, it is recommended the following:

Quality

  1. The image should be of the highest quality available. Screen-captures from the game or video of the game are preferred, with other formats being secondary. In the case of duplicate images, the highest quality image is kept.
  2. The infobox image should depict the image icon if available. For maps, scenarios and campaigns, the minimap icon should be used.
  3. Extreme closeups should generally be avoided.

Replacement

Replacing (overwriting an image) can take place when the original file is of low resolution/quality. In this case, the original picture must be replaced by exactly the same version with better quality.
